Shamsul Haque is a former NYPD Lieutenant Commander and an immigrant running for New York State Assembly in District 30 (Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, Woodside, Maspeth). He would be the first Bangladeshi American to serve in the state Legislature if elected. Haque has been endorsed by Senator Bernie Sanders and is running on a platform of taxing the rich, reforming criminal justice, and making public universities tuition-free.

    Shamsul Haque supports making Queens more affordable by passing a rent freeze for rent-stabilized tenants statewide, passing the REST Act to declare a housing emergency statewide, investing in truly affordable housing by redefining income requirements to local averages, supporting community land trusts, pushing for property tax relief for homeowners, and strengthening tenant protections and enforcing housing laws.

    Haque supports tuition-free CUNY and SUNY and full funding as part of the ND4C Coalition's priorities, investing in student support and full-time faculty at public universities.

    Haque supports increasing funding for hate crime investigations and victim support, protecting LGBTQ+ students from bullying and discrimination in schools, strengthening workforce and housing protections for LGBTQ+ New Yorkers, protecting New Yorkers against Trump's attacks on their medical care, and increasing shelter capacity and foster care protections for LGBTQ+ New Yorkers.

    Haque supports protecting and fully funding repairs to Elmhurst Hospital, guaranteeing healthcare for all New Yorkers by passing the NY Health Act, and expanding mental health services and community care.

    Haque supports passing NY4ALL to ban police-ICE collaboration, opposing racial profiling and discriminatory surveillance, establishing a legislative commission on the rise of Islamophobia, supporting anti-caste discrimination efforts, strengthening language access and culturally competent government services, expanding legal aid and immigrant defense funding, and increasing funding for hate crime prevention and victim support.
