DiNapoli's first primary challenge in nearly two decades

Thomas DiNapoli has been New York's comptroller — the state's chief fiscal officer and sole trustee of a roughly $295 billion public-pension fund — since 2007, and is seeking a fifth full term. For the first time in nearly two decades he faces a contested Democratic primary: Drew Warshaw, a former affordable-housing executive, and Raj Goyle, an attorney and former Kansas legislator, both argue from his left that he has underused the office's pension and audit powers on affordability, Wall Street fees, and divestment. Siena polling has shown soft reelect numbers and low name recognition for DiNapoli, though no public head-to-head poll of the three has been released.
